(These words are used in many different subject areas and are often found on standardized tests and longer-term assignments.)

Word Definition
Democracy: "Government by the people; especially: rule of the majority, a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free, competitive, elections.”
Self-Concept: "The idea or mental image one has of oneself and one's strengths, weakness, status, ect.; self-image."
Constitution: "...a body of fundamental laws setting out the principals, structures, and processes of the government and placing limits upon government action."
Dissent: "To differ in sentiment or opinion, especially from the majority; to disagree with the methods, goals, ect., of a political party or government; take an opposing view; to disagree with or reject the doctrines or authority of an established church."
Republic: "A state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them; any body of persons viewed aas a commonwealth; a state in which the head of government is not a monarch or other hereditary head of state."

Word Definition
Evaluate: Substitute numbers for variables in an expression and follow order of operations to evaluate the expression. When x=2 and y=-1, 2x + 3y evaluates to 1.
Percentile: A percentile is a value that divides the range of a data set into two parts such that the part below the percentile contains a given percent of data. If you score in the 80th percentile on a test then 80% of the scores were below yours.
Irrational Number: A number whose decimal equivalent never ends and has no repeating patten.
Ex. The square root of 5 = 2.23606797...
Permutation: A permutation is an arrangement of items in a particular order. The number of ways five books can be arranged on a shelf is a permutation. Five books can be arranged on a shelf 120 different ways. (5x4x3x2x1 = 5! = 120)

Word Definition
Homologous: 1. Corresponding in position, proportion, structure, value, or other property.
2. In biology, corresponding in type of structure and in origin but not necessarily in appearance or function.
3. In chemistry, belonging to a series where successive members differ regularly in formula, especially a series of organic compounds differing by multiples of CH2, such as the alchohols and aldehydes.
Insoluble: Incapable of being dissolved: insoluble salts.
Ambiguous: 1. Having two or more possible meanings.
2. Not clear; indefinite; vague
Quantitative: 1. Having to do with quantity.
2. Capable of being measured.

Word Definition
Unity: Occurs when all of the elements of a piece combine to make a balanced, harmonious, complete whole.
Linear Perspective: A system of drawing or painting in which the artist attempts to create the illusion of spatial depth on a two-dimensional surface.It works by following consistent geometric rules for rendering objects as they appear to the human eye.

Autonomic Reflex: A reflex which is unlearned, unpremeditated, involuntary and in which the pathways are built into the neural anatomy of each individual during development.
Basal Metabolic Rate: The rate at which calories are used to sustain life functions during rest.
Ectomorph: A person that is characterized by long and thin muscles/limbs and low fat storage; usually refered to as slim.
Hypokinetic: Physically inactive or sedentary.

Prospectus: A legal document that offers securities or mutual fund shares for sale.
Pixelated: Pertaining to a printed image which has been digitized; visible as a pattern of pixels.
Copyright: Protects the original expression of ideas when fixed in a tangible form. It provides the creators of original works of authorship including books, music, plays and computer software programs with the exclusive right to do (and authorize other people to do) the following: 1. To reproduce the work in copies or by recording. 2. To prepare derivative works (works that are based on the incorporate parts of the original). Example: A translation of a book into a foreign language is a derivative work. A modification of a song by adding a different beat is a derivative work. 3. To distribute copies or recordings of the work to the public. 4. To perform or display the work publicly, in the case of movies, music, sound recordings, and audiovisual materials.

Music. a sequence of notes or chords that indicates the momentary or complete end of a composition, section, phrase, etc.
Doppelganger:A ghostly double of another character, especially if it haunts its counterpart - a doppelganger, in German, means "double walker" - it's a carbon copy of a character with a different soul; Frankenstein and his monster are considered doppelgangers.
