Ludlow High School

Expect success, every child, every day

From the Desk of Mrs. Nemeth

The importance of the name, Ludlow Lion, has meant so many different things to so many people throughout the years. I wanted to share one particular incidence that occurred this fall that I think is a perfect analogy to what is important here at Ludlow High School, this year, and for many years to come.

A young man came to the main office to inquire about viewing a yearbook. I happened to be at the counter and said I would be happy to help him. We walked to the vault that holds the yearbooks and we began looking for the yearbook for the Class of . . . 1947. His name was Angelo Teixeira, Class of 1946, and he was looking for the names of classmates of his brother, James Teixeira, Class of 1947. His brother had lost contact with his best friend and Angelo was trying to help his brother find other people who may have had contact with his best friend. We spent about 20 minutes looking at yearbooks and it was mesmerizing to me to listen to this 83 year old man remenence about his years at Ludlow High School. His memories first included his teachers. He told me about many teachers who inspired him and then he went on to discuss the friendships he had made. He mentioned the war was going on and it was fascinating to actually be talking to a man who had such vivid memories of WWI. The one thing I was most enthralled with was his enthusiasm and excitement as he talked about his high school days. He was so proud and so excited to say he was an alumnus, a Ludlow Lion.

As we began to depart the school, he asked me if he could walk by the athletic hall of fame. I said, of course and that I would accompany him. As we walked amongst the plaques, he stopped in front of one in particular and pointed toward it. He asked “have I changed much?” I looked at the plaque and it read “Angelo Teixeira, Class of 1947.” It actually brought tears to my eyes that he was so proud of his accomplishments and wanted to share them with me. . He showed me his brother’s plaque, his cousin’s plaque, and told me stories about other men that had plaques on the wall.

After Mr. Teixeira’s visit, I really felt a sense a pride and a sense of community in Ludlow High School. That is my hope for all students, teachers, staff members, parents, and community members here at LHS – to realize we are working towards a common goal. That goal is a goal of education, a goal of respect, a goal of achievement.

This school year has started out with accomplishing many of those goals. The students showed their pride and respect for each other during Pride Week, teachers have been working long hours to provide the best instruction to help students achieve, clubs have been meeting to accomplish community service or in-school activities, athletic teams have been displaying sportsmanship and respect,  administration has been supporting the achievements of students and staff, guidance department held an outstanding college fair, custodians have been working long hours to keep the building safe and clean, and cafeteria workers have been providing nutritious and appetizing meals. Working together is a lifelong skill that is so beneficial. High school is so much more than MCAS scores, midterm exams, presentations, or who you are going to sit with at lunch time. As Mr. Teixeira taught me, it is having pride in your self, your decisions, and your respect to others. That is what being a Ludlow Lion is all about.
