The
mission of the Ludlow High School Art Department is to present a
variety of experiences that will foster self-expression and communication
through the visual arts. Skill-building, conceptual exploration
and educated appreciation will enhance a student's individual growth
in the creative process, involving problem-solving and discovery-learning,
as outlined within the five standards and five connecting strands
of the state's curriculum frameworks.

COURSE CREDITS
|
An
introduction to basic elements of two-dimensional art (drawing,
painting, design elements, and art principles) and three-dimensional
art (sculpture and assemblage) as well as an introduction to crafts
is part of the course syllabus. A brief survey of the history of
the arts is also part of the course syllabus. This course is basic
to all other course offerings.

The emphasis in the second year is on a more technical plane. Students
will create a lesser range of products with major emphasis on individual
skills and techniques rather than the multiple experience of Art

COURSE CREDITS
|
The entire core curriculum in this course will be devoted to the
individual expression of the student in general creative experiences,
which may be controlled by the student's personal choice of expression.
The student will select his or her own personal expression within
the media.

CERAMICS

COURSE CREDITS
|
This course is open to all students who have a desire to create
art in three-dimension. Prior study in an Art I course is strongly
recommended but not required. The course work is more intense in
a "hands-on" study of the medium. Students will be encouraged to
use all methods of construction and hand building techniques to
create sculpture and pottery. Other skills and techniques in caste-making
will be done if time permits. A brief survey of the history of the
arts is also part of the course syllabus. Productivity, creative
endeavor and craftsmanship are strongly emphasized.

Prerequisites: Open to all students who have attained a minimum
of a B (83-86%) average in Ceramics 1 |

COURSE CREDITS
|
This course will enable the student to expand his/her goals in ceramic
sculpture and pottery focusing on form and function. Students will
be encouraged to create their own broad goals for the year. Their
level of skill, interest, and knowledge will expand in ceramics
through their independent efforts. A brief survey of the history
of the arts is also part of the course syllabus. Productivity, creative
endeavor and craftsmanship are strongly emphasized. Throwing techniques
on the pottery wheel will be introduced.

COURSE CREDITS

The
essential purpose of the Art Major course is three-fold:

To allow interested, gifted, and talented students to develop
an in-depth understanding experiencing a greater appreciation
for aesthetics as well as technical skills.
- To
assist students in selecting and organizing samples of their art
work to provide a clear demonstration of their artistic development
for admission to art school or for personal use.
- To
allow students to work on assigned and independent projects in
concentrated areas of interest. Personal expressions, both visual
and verbal, are encouraged. Students may elect to prepare for
the Advanced Placement Art Studio Exam.
