The mission of the Ludlow High School Modern Language Department is to teach languages other than English by conforming to the five strands of state's curriculum framework:
Studying a Modern language helps the individual become more aware of the world community and more sensitive to other cultures. Language study also reinforces the study of English while developing good work habits and study skills.
The language program at Ludlow High School offers courses in French, Portuguese, and Spanish.
The study of a language should play a major role in a liberal, humanistic education and share equal status with the other major disciplines. All college-bound students, as well as others who are academically motivated, should study a language for a minimum of two years at the high school level. Those who succeed should continue their study of language through the advanced levels. Qualified students should be encouraged to complete the full four- or five-year sequence in one language, rather than combining elementary levels of various languages. In the French and Spanish curricula, students who begin a language in eighth grade may attain the fifth year of instruction during the senior year of high school.
Class sizes and student ability levels determine the number of sections offered in a given year. All students who sign up to take a level one Portuguese course (and all new students to Ludlow High School who wish to take Portuguese 2, 3, or 4) will be tested and/or interviewed by a Portuguese teacher in order to determine their proper level of ability. Current Ludlow High School students electing Portuguese 2, 3, and 4 will be placed at the proper skill level, as determined by their success in their current Portuguese class.
