The mission of the Business Department at Ludlow High School is to provide quality and varied educational opportunities that support all students in realizing their fullest potential in a learning community and that facilitates the ongoing development of responsible adults who possess entry-level skills that contribute to success in a dynamic world.

All students are urged to complete Information Processing 1 & 2 to help them in future courses such as English, social studies, mathematics, foreign languages and sciences where students may be required to use computers in the Computer Lab.

Advanced courses in Accounting 2, Desktop Publishing and Internet and Web Page Design/HTML are available for students to pursue career goals.

ACCOUNTING 1

With accounting being the language of business, students will find that this course applies to both their personal and professional lives. Students will be given the opportunity to develop an understanding of how a business analyzes records and interprets financial information. In addition, automated accounting will be covered through the use of realistic computerized business simulations. The successful completion of this course will provide the student with a solid skill base in introductory accounting as well as entry-level employment opportunities in the business community.

This course will continue to stimulate and advance business knowledge. A greater emphasis will be placed upon actual concepts, standards, and principles followed by all professional accountants, in both public and private practice. Corporate accounting will be studied in much greater detail, giving students the ability to prepare more advanced financial statements. In addition, an even stronger emphasis will be placed on computerized/automated business simulations. Successful completion of this course will give the student an excellent background for further study at the college level, as well as direct employment opportunities.

This course will cover the entire accounting cycle at an accelerated pace. Students will be given the opportunity to develop an understanding of how a business analyzes records and interprets financial information. Concepts, standards, and principles followed by all professional accountants, in both public and private practice will be explored. Corporate, payroll and tax accounting will be studied in detail, giving students the ability to prepare more advanced financial statements. This course is strongly recommended for students who would like to pursue business at the collegiate level. Automated accounting will be used in this course.

Commercial Law emphasizes not only the law used in every-day business activities, but also as it affects the individual in his or her personal life. The course covers civil actions, contracts, employer and employee relationships, buying services, acquiring and transferring property, and forming different kinds of business organizations. A mock trial is included in the course.

Utilizing Microsoft Office, the student will develop skills necessary to use all of the functions available in:

  • Word - a word processor
  • Excel - a spreadsheet application giving students the ability to perform business and scientific calculations. Excel also provides powerful charting, database management, and macro-programming capabilities.
  • Access - a business database software that tracks information for businesses or individuals
  • PowerPoint- an easy-to-use graphics program that students use to create professional-quality business and project-slide presentations.

The student will have hands-on experience with documents used in both personal and professional situations. College-bound students should be aware that anyone can play games and chat using a computer; however, not everyone can utilize and apply software to personal and professional needs. Colleges assume students already have these skills. This course is highly recommended for all students.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

This course will help students be successful in creating and running a small business. The course will focus on academic skills, management concepts and practices and personal traits entrepreneurs need. This course will assist students in learning to identify, develop and apply their attitudes, abilities, skills and goals in the most effective way in both the local and international-business community. The students will actually create a business and/or product as a project to apply their business knowledge. Students will be introduced to the new global customer. Business people dealing with the international market need to know both sides of the business picture. This course is affiliated with The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) and the Youth Entrepreneur Scholars (YES) at Springfield Technical Community College (STCC). This course is highly recommended for all students interested in starting their own business someday.

DESKTOP PUBLISHING

The students will learn to use desktop publishing software and will apply that knowledge to practical situations such as creating newsletters, flyers, cards, calendars, and brochures. Students will learn basic graphic design techniques and philosophies. Students will help with practical school needs such as publishing the school newsletter, creating computer presentations, printing posters, programs and calendars for school events, and creating PowerPoint presentations. The course will include instruction in: advanced topics in word processing, graphics and design-presentation software; adding audio and video to computer presentations; the use of peripheral devices such as graphic and text scanners, and cameras; and searching the internet. The course is highly recommended for all students.

INTERNET and WEB PAGE DESIGN/HTML 1

This course will focus on two areas:

1. Web Page Design using Hypertext markup language, HTML, the programming language of web pages and how to use HTML creatively and efficiently to develop a web site including the use of HTML tables will be learned in this class. Students will create their own site in this course.

2. Students will explore some of the World Wide Web's most important features including browsers, search engines, and file transfer. Students will learn search strategies to locate desired information for research papers and projects for English, social studies, science, etc. in high school and college. This course is high recommended for all students.

Business and Personal Finance shows high school students how to manage their finances now and in the future. Students will find out how businesses manage their finances, and they will learn how important wise financial management is to personal and business success.

This course is designed to provide students with a foundation of the investments field as well as some study of banking procedures. Specific areas of study will include an in-depth look at stock exchanges, where and how to invest money, and what a stockbroker actually does. A realistic stock market simulation allowing students the opportunity to buy and sell stock based upon their own investment decisions is an integral part of the learning experience.

This course will help students learn how to file their individual income returns as well as provide an historical perspective and understanding of our country's tax system. A considerable amount of class time will be given to preparing various tax returns, both long and short forms. The area of insurance will also be covered, with special emphasis on automobile coverage, as it relates to the student. The course is highly recommended for all students.

VIDEO/MOVIE PRODUCTION

This is an introductory course in video/movie making. This course will focus on video, audio, and multi-media technology. Students will have hands-on experience using digital camcorders and video editing software. Students will produce a variety of videos from still images set to music and/or voice over, animation, a news broadcast, a television commercial, a public service announcement, a movie of choice, and a documentary. The basic concepts of media literacy will be explored by students as they analyze and evaluate television, video, advertising, radio, Internet, etc. Discussions will include ethics and values, gender portrayal, body image, stereotyping, and communicating through video all of which will provide the framework for critical thinking about student productions. Students will look at videos and other media forms very differently after taking this course.

TV STUDIO 1

TV Studio 1 is an introduction to the basics of TV production skills. Students will become familiar with video and sound considerations and TV studio equipment. Students will train on all the fundamental pieces of TV equipment and will learn the steps involved in the creation and execution of a television production. The course will include a project that students will build, produce, and tape for a grade. Students will also be required to assist in two evening cable television presentations. Parents/Guardians will be required to sign a liability form for both off-site requirements of the course and proper handling of all video equipment.

TV Studio 2 is the follow-up course to TV Studio 1 with more advanced studio production techniques presented. Students will be required to assist in two evening cable television presentations. Parents/Guardians will be required to sign a liability form for both off-site requirements of the course and proper handling of all video equipment.

Prerequisites: Job Shadow experience or approval of the school-to-career coordinator

HALF YEAR

(First and Second Half)

2.5 COURSE CREDITS

This program is based on the principles of the school-to-career initiative. It allows Ludlow High School grades 11 and 12 students to enter an agreement with a business, organization, or individual sponsor for a non-salaried, “on-site”, educational experience related to the student’s area of career interest. Students would be assigned to the internship period 7 everyday, five days a week, for one semester and earn 2.5 credits. Students may need to stay beyond period 7 in order to fulfill the internship requirements. Grades are based on evaluations by the student, the business site coordinator, and the LHS School-to-Career coordinator.

Acceptance into the program is dependant upon the student’s academic, discipline, and attendance records as well as the availability of a suitable internship site.
